From how the Allurion Program works to clinical access, get the facts on the world’s first procedureless gastric balloon and digital care ecosystem.
The Allurion Balloon is an FDA approved gastric balloon (also known as an intragastric balloon or IGB) made from polyurethane, a material that is much thinner and more flexible than the silicone material in other gastric balloons. The Allurion Balloon is enclosed in a Smart Capsule that is composed of a vegetarian, non-animal derived, degradable material that encloses the balloon. The balloon occupies space within the stomach, promoting a feeling of fullness and reducing food intake. After approximately 16 weeks, the Allurion Balloon empties through a patented Release Valve and is naturally eliminated.
The Smart Capsule is swallowed by the patient to introduce the Allurion Balloon into the stomach. In previously published studies, 99.9% of patients were able to swallow the Capsule.
The filled Allurion Balloon is designed to remain in the stomach for approximately 16 weeks. During the AUDACITY Study, the Balloon remained in the stomach for a little over 15 weeks.
During this time, the Allurion Balloon operates in the same ways as other IGBs to promote satiety and reduce food consumption.
At the end of the treatment period, the Allurion Balloon is designed to automatically open and drain. At this point, the empty Allurion Balloon is designed to transit the gastrointestinal tract and be excreted without further intervention. In some cases, the drained Allurion Balloon may exit the stomach via vomiting.
We understand that weight regain after balloon passage is a common fear and source of anxiety. This is why the Allurion Balloon is accompanied by nutritional coaching and medical support to help you change your lifestyle and develop a healthier routine. Once the Allurion Balloon is out of your body, the support from your follow-up team continues until the end of the Allurion Programme to help you maintain the same eating habits.
The Allurion Balloon is placed in the stomach during an outpatient consultation.4 The patient swallows a capsule containing the deflated balloon, which is attached to a thin tube (catheter). Once the presence of the capsule in the patient’s stomach is confirmed (by X-ray), the balloon is filled with liquid using the catheter. A second X-ray is performed to ensure that the balloon is properly filled. The procedure is then complete, and the catheter is gently removed. The balloon is designed to self-empty after approximately 4 months and pass naturally:4*
On average, patients who received the Allurion Balloon along with a moderate intensity lifestyle modification therapy program lost 2.2 times more weight after 1 year than patients who just received a moderate intensity lifestyle modification therapy program alone.
The Allurion Smart Capsule is a swallowable intragastric balloon that occupies space inside the stomach to help you feel full sooner and support weight loss as part of a supervised program. It does not involve surgery, endoscopy, or anesthesia in typical use, and the balloon is designed to pass naturally after approximately four months. The Smart Capsule is combined with a lifestyle modification program and the Allurion Virtual Care Suite to enable long-term behavior change.
GLP‑1 medications are prescription drugs that act on hormone receptors throughout the body to help control blood sugar and increase feelings of fullness. They are injected or taken orally on an ongoing basis and are approved in the United States for type 2 diabetes and/or chronic weight management when used with diet and increased physical activity.
Previously published studies completed outside of USA have shown that the Allurion Program could be combined with low dose GLP-1s to achieve enhanced outcomes, including resolution of certain diseases related to obesity.
Metabolically healthy weight loss is about more than the number on the scale. It focuses on long-term fat loss, muscle preservation, and improvements to overall metabolic health, including blood sugar regulation, energy levels and reduced risk of chronic disease.
Weight loss, weight maintenance, and muscle gain must go hand in hand, and that's the goal for patients who follow the Allurion Program.
